The Vegetarian

I see the slaughtered flesh of animals
Neatly packaged on refrigerated grocery shelves
And as I walk by I remember
That I am infected with lowly bacteria
A sinus infection
Which my body feverishly murders
Man cannot live by salt alone

I look about my garden
Even the trees compete for sunlight
My paradise on earth has dissolved
But it hasn't changed at all
It was always this way
We consume, we are consumed
The world is a carcass.
